On Sunday, Sunday Igboho, a Yoruba activist, was freed from protective custody in the Benin Republic.
Yoruba Nation Leader Prof. Banji Akintoye announced his release in a statement.
On his journey to Germany in July 2021, Igboho was detained in the Benin Republic.
Following a raid on his home by the Department of State Services (DSS), which suspected him of keeping cache of arms, he left Nigeria.
His Soka home in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, had been raided by the DSS after he was charged with maintaining an arsenal of weapons.
In order to protect his client’s safety, Igboho’s attorney has urged the government of the Benin Republic to block his extradition to Nigeria.
Igboho was taken into custody at Cotonou’s Cardinal Bernardin International Airport, according to the authorities, according to a local publication in the Benin Republic called Banouto.
