Yetunde Kuti, the wife of Seun Kuti, recently spoke about the initial obstacles she faced when considering marriage to the Kuti family. During an interview on the show Your View on TVC, Yetunde opened up about her family’s apprehensions regarding her union with Seun.
According to Yetunde, her family had concerns and misunderstandings about her potential marriage to Seun Kuti. They warned her about the possibility of becoming one of many wives, alluding to the polygamous history of Seun’s father, Fela Kuti.
She said: I have always had the idea of not wanting to be married, and my family was expecting me not to get married, especially to Seun. I grew up with people whose marriages were not stable and looked at it from their perspective, and I realized that everybody has their own reasons their marriages didn’t work, and people can’t just continue like that.” “There’s a sacrifice that one has to make, but some people don’t want to make the sacrifice. My family said my life would end if I married Seun Kuti and that I would just be one of his 35 wives. They said his father married many wives and that he would marry more than him.”
Despite these warnings, Yetunde decided to challenge societal stereotypes and misconceptions surrounding marriage. She expressed her desire to defy familial expectations and forge her path in life. Yetunde’s story serves as an example of resilience and determination, as she navigated through familial pressure and societal norms to pursue love and commitment.
Throughout her interview, Yetunde emphasized the importance of making sacrifices in relationships and not succumbing to societal expectations. Her story sheds light on the challenges faced by individuals in navigating personal relationships and societal pressures.
Yetunde’s openness and courage in sharing her story serve as a beacon of hope for those struggling with similar challenges. Her decision to prioritize love and commitment despite familial and societal pressure is an inspiring tale of resilience and determination.
