Yamal wonder goal clinches La Liga crown for Barcelona

Barcelona officially became the 2024/2025 La Liga champions on Thursday, after defeating local rivals, Espanyol, 2-0. The victory, sealed away from home, provided the perfect end to a dominant campaign for Hansi Flick’s men.

The match began with Espanyol creating two clear one-on-one opportunities within the opening minutes, taking advantage of Barcelona’s defensive frailties that have resulted in 19 goals conceded across their previous eight fixtures in all competitions. However, the hosts failed to capitalise on these early chances, allowing Barcelona to gradually establish control despite entering half-time without breaking the deadlock.

The turning point arrived in the 53rd minute when 17-year-old Lamine Yamal received possession on the right wing, cut inside, and curled a magnificent shot into the top corner. This moment of brilliance from the young star proved worthy of winning the title and gave Barcelona the lead they needed to claim their 28th La Liga championship.

Espanyol’s frustration grew following the goal, culminating in Leandro Cabrera striking Yamal in the stomach, an action that prompted referee, César Soto, to issue a red card after VAR consultation. Barcelona then confirmed their victory in stoppage time when Yamal turned provider, setting up Fermín López, who finished emphatically into the bottom corner.

Barcelona will host Villarreal on Sunday at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, where they will celebrate their achievement with home supporters. The triumph is a return to the summit of Spanish football for the Catalans, who have consistently performed throughout the season and succeeded in taking the crown from rivals, Real Madrid.
