‘Women must be made to pay for false rape allegations’- social media reacts to Benjamin Mendy’s acquital

Following a recent court decision that cleared former Manchester City defender, Benjamin Mendy of rape charges, social media users have continued to express their opinions on the court’s ruling.

A jury at Chester Crown court found former Manchester City footballer Benjamin Mendy not guilty of rape and attempted rape.

In October 2022, the French defender was charged with raping a 24-year-old woman at his Cheshire home.

Similar to this, he was accused of attempting to rape a woman, 29, who claimed he had molested her at his house two years prior.

The jury, which consisted of six men and six women, found Mendy not guilty after he refuted both charges.

After a three-week trial at Chester Crown Court, Mendy cried as the jury’s verdicts, which affirmed his innocence, were read out.

However, a number of social media users have continued to respond to the development in different ways, with influencers voicing their varied opinions on the matter.

Pooja, a renowned Nigerian sport influencer called for the need to have a penalty for false allegations.

The sport influencer argued that those who falsely accused the footballer cannot ruin his sporting career and walk free

“ False allegations must have a penalty as well. You can’t ruin careers with it & walk free,” Pooja wrote.

On his part @THEOFANIS_TAIWO, advised the former Manchester City defender to drag his accusers to court for accusing him falsely. “Increase the volume. Make Mendy sef carry the person to court for false allegations,” he tweeted.

@KadunoGshunom also encouraged Mendy’s legal team to file for malicious prosecution against all the complainants.

“It’s simple, his Legal team should file for malicious prosecution against all the complainant’s and the prosecution/States.”

Sharing his opinion, @adejoju_Ayofe who detailed that there are penalties for wrong allegations, however lamented that the penalties do not equate to the damage done in any way

“There are penalties for false accusations, albeit doesn’t equate to the damage done in any way. That’s why internet jungle Justice should be looked into. Careers can be ruined from any false accusations, not just rape, so the prayer here is to not be wrongly accused at all,” he wrote.

Recall that Mendy who would have been among the squad that won Manchester City its first title treble was dropped from the club’s squad following the rape allegations from different women
