An anonymous whistleblower who goes by the X name @PIDOMNIGERIA or 99% Oppressed, has been missing, according to investigative journalist David Hundeyin who fears Nigerian authorities are behind the disappearance.
Hundeyin said those behind the disappearance of PIDOM also tried to get at him by pretending to be the relative of the whistleblower.
According to Hundeyin, he received a direct message through PIDOM X handle from someone pretending to be the confidante of the whistleblower, alerting him of the news of PIDOM’s arrest and pleading to keep it quiet. He said the so-called confidante also provided login details of PIDOM X handle account to Hundeyin after initially providing him with the wrong login details. Hundeyin said when he finally logged into the handle of PIDOM, his WhatsApp account came under cyber attacks.
According to Hundeyin, the likely suspects in the disappearance of PIDOM and those who contacted him were authorities from Nigeria. He explained why: “The purported close associate’ of PIDOM who only decided to reach out to me today – 17 days after he was allegedly arrested – was at the very least, not being truthful with me. If PIDOM’s express instructions to a close and trusted person were to contact me, they would have done so immediately, and would definitely not have waited 2 and a half weeks.
“The fact that this person (or persons) kept tweeting from PIDOM’s account after the 5th of August (and did not need my help trying to sound like him), meant that they had another reason for wanting to get me involved now, 17 days after the fact.
“In our several conversations, PIDOM alluded many times to having multi-factor authentication and multiple layers of security on all his social media accounts and electronic devices. The idea that I would be able to login to his account using only a username and password – no 2FA code from the supposedly destroyed phone containing the authenticator apps – meant that someone had systematically gained control over all his internet accounts. That phone was definitely not destroyed in the “scuffle” that allegedly culminated in his arrest.
“The originating IP adresses of login attempts to Twitter and Gmail accounts can be viewed by anyone logged into the account. The purpose of giving me the wrong login details could have been to attempt to view my IP address – and thus track my physical location. Unfortunately, I happen to use a VPN pointed permanently at Lagos, Nigeria or Accra, Ghana.”
