Renowned Nigerian political economist, Pat Utomi, has slammed Senate President Godswill Akpabio for making jokes with the plights of the Nigerian masses occasioned by the recent removal of fuel subsidy.
PoliticsNow had earlier reported that Nigerians were outraged by the unnecessary move of Mr Akpabio to make jokes with ‘let the poor breathe,’ a popular phrase linked to the Nigerian president.
However, responding to Akpabio’s conduct in a tweet on Thursday, Utomi said he was traumatized by Akpabio’s action.
“I am traumatized by this mocking of the poor by our Senate. In a decent society we should have had resignations by now. To mock the poor is to mock God. I know where Godswill Akpabio was before Obong Victor Attah gave a hand. Better an honest poor than a rich thief politician,” Utomi wrote.
Recall that President Bola Tinubu’s decision to end fuel subsidy caused the price of petrol to increase from N189 to above N600 per litre. However, the increase had seen the cost of goods soar significantly, making it difficult for Nigerians to afford even the most basic necessities. To lessen the effects of the departure, the government led by President Tinubu has pledged palliative measures.
