The plea for unified support in the battle against terrorism and insurgency has been made by the military high command, emphasizing that the military cannot tackle these challenges in isolation.
Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, conveyed this message during a bi-weekly media briefing on military operations held in Abuja on Thursday.
He stated, “It is evident that solely relying on the military cannot bring an end to terrorism and insurgency. Our mission against these security threats necessitates a collective commitment from society at large. The perpetrators of insecurity are not faceless entities; they have families, connections, and are part of communities across the nation.”
Buba highlighted the various ways in which the public can demonstrate their support for the military’s efforts to combat terrorism and insurgency. He emphasized that such support should align with the will of the people.
Discussing recent operations over the past week, Buba reported significant achievements. Troops successfully neutralized 191 terrorists, apprehended 184 terrorists and 22 individuals involved in oil theft, and rescued 91 kidnapped hostages. Additionally, 104 BH/ISWAP terrorists and their families surrendered to troops in various theaters of operation.
The military also discovered and dismantled 38 dugout pits, 21 boats, 57 storage tanks, 3 tapping hoses, 4 drum receivers, 89 cooking ovens, 6 pumping machines, and 34 illegal refining sites in the Niger Delta region. They recovered 696,250 liters of stolen crude oil, 54,400 liters of illegally refined AGO (Automotive Gas Oil), and 1,200 liters of PMS (Premium Motor Spirit).
Buba reiterated the unwavering commitment of the Armed Forces to counter extremist groups, exposing their tactics as self-serving endeavors fueled by violence. He concluded by sending a clear message to these groups, asserting that the military is resolutely focused on pursuing peace and safeguarding the nation from those who threaten its stability.
