Workers in Abuja turned out in large numbers on Wednesday to participate in the protest against the difficult economic circumstances of the country as the Nigerian Labour Congress protest got underway.
In a video posted on the official Twitter handle of the NLC, workers were seen wielding flags and placards with various inscriptions in support of the demonstration.
Recall that the Joe Ajero-led Labour union had previously stated that it would carry out its scheduled strike. The group’s decision to strike comes after the government of President Bola Tinubu failed to persuade the union of the importance of implementing effective palliative measures to mitigate the effects of the loss of gasoline subsidies.
Nigerians have continued to bear the brunt of the removal of fuel subsidies, with fuel now selling for more than N600 per litre. Tinubu-led administration had earlier pledged palliative measures, but the workers union is dissatisfied with the efforts taken by the Tinubu-led government to alleviate the pain caused by the removal of fuel subsidies.
