The Kano State Government has conducted a mass wedding for at least 1,800 couples across the 44 local government councils of the state.
Among the beneficiaries of the mass wedding, include widows, divorcees, and spinsters.
A total number of 3,600 individuals were wedded in the event which was attended by the state governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, and the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) presidential candidate in the last election, Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
A video showing the newly wedded individuals in colourful white and red attire, has got netizens talking.
@NG_GWG said: “Can someone please educate me about this. Is it that the men are hopeless in finding a woman and the state is match-making & wedding them or the man and woman initially know themselves but are unable to afford the cost of wedding ceremonies? I need to be enlightened.”
ShakoroAbbas responded: “Some know themselves while some don’t. The bride’s side is supposed to bring furniture, bed and kitchen appliances. But due to the situation in Nigeria, the government takes the responsibility.”
@kuwait_magix said: “No good educational system, no empowerment or poverty alleviation. High numbers of school dropouts, Almajiri scattered everywhere begging. This should be the major concern of the government. Marrying wives for people won’t cure the economic situation. It adds to the problem.”
@DipoPopson said: “But really, instead of spending so much to have so many couples wedded like this why not empower them and let them have the capacity to marry within their pocket? Nawa oo.”
tanimolaolawal1 said: “I don’t understand, why marry for people who don’t have money to maintain the marriage.”
