Nigerians of Igbo extractions living in Niger Republic have appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu led-Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to shelve the idea of war.
In a video making rounds on Twitter, the Nigerians, in their hundreds, gathered in front of what looks like a government building.
A man, clutching a loudspeaker, could be heard addressing the Nigerians in Igbo language. The audience, many of them nodded in affirmation to his speech. They said: “It’s peace we want. We don’t want war.”
Nigerians at home have also overwhelmingly rejected going to war with Niger.
The Senate, in an executive session on Saturday, also denied the request of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to wage war against Niger.
Niger shares a border with seven states in the northern part of Nigeria, and has linguistic and cultural ties with the Hausa, Fulani and Kanuri ethnic groups of Nigeria. A war against the country could damage hundreds of years of fraternal relationships.
