Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume has expressed frustration in the negotiation with Labour for a new minimum wage.
Labour continues to wave strike as option if the federal government doesn’t present over N100,000 as minimum wage. The Federal government says the country will be broke paying that sum as minimum wage.
Akume, during a meeting of the Tripartite committee which includes the organized labour, the organised private sector and the government said aloud that he can’t afford to pay his driver N100,000 because they are four.
“Please I can’t afford to pay my four drivers N100,000 per month,” Akume said at the meeting.
Akume’s comment comes hours after Finance Minister Wale Edun reportedly presented a N105,000 proposal as the new minimum wage to President Ahmed Tinubu, although the presidency through Bayo Onanuga denied the report.
Tinubu had asked Edun to present a new minimum wage and their cost implication attached.
