Uruguayan football icon Luis Suarez has inked a one-year deal with MLS club Inter Miami CF, as officially announced on Friday. The contract also includes an option for extension through the year 2025.
This move reunites Suarez with his former FC Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi, who joined Inter Miami earlier in the summer. The duo played together at Barcelona from 2014 to 2020, contributing to the club’s success with four La Liga titles and the 2015 UEFA Champions League. Since Messi’s arrival at Inter Miami, the team has experienced heightened fan interest and secured their inaugural trophy, the Leagues Cup.
At the age of 36, Suarez makes the transition to Inter Miami after his recent stint with Grêmio in Brazil. Following his departure from Barcelona in 2020, Suarez has played for various clubs, including Atletico Madrid in Spain and Nacional in Uruguay. Despite being past his prime, Suarez remains a significant draw, known for his goal-scoring prowess.
Jorge Mas, the owner of Inter Miami, has been actively pursuing high-profile players to elevate the club’s stature since its inception into MLS in 2020. The acquisitions of Messi and now Suarez amplify the anticipation for the upcoming season.
With two international superstars leading the attack, Inter Miami faces high expectations to contend for an MLS Cup in 2023. The potential striking partnership of Messi and Suarez is poised to capture considerable attention, a prospect eagerly embraced by the club’s management.
