UTME resit: Candidates overwhelm JAMB’s office in Owerri, seek clarifications

A massive crowd of candidates have swarmed the head office of Joint Admission and Matriculation Board in Owerri, the capital of Imo State seeking information and clarification for the resit Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) ordered by the exam body following a technical glitch.

The resit examination was scheduled for yesterday, May 16 in the South East and Lagos. But on the examination day, another glitch similar to the experience that made JAMB to order for resit across some centres occured. Officials asked some of the affected candidates to return today for another resit.

As at the time of writing this report, candidates were spotted looking confused at their centres, with officials unable to provide helpful solutions.

A parent who took his ward for the examination lamented: “This is JAMB Office, Owerri yesterday. Confusion everywhere… Many JAMB candidates in the southeast will miss the opportunity to rewrite the examination. What a pity!”

JAMB rescheduled the UTME for 379,997 candidates in the five states of the South East and Lagos affected by errors in various computer-based test centres.

Ishaq Oloyede, the registrar of JAMB, made this known in Abuja on Wednesday, May 14, during a press conference.

Oloyede, who took responsibility for what he described as a “sabotage” of the 2025 UTME, said the affected candidates will start getting text messages from the board starting from Thursday, May 15.

“The affected candidates will start getting text messages for reschedule starting from tomorrow. I apologise, I take full responsibility,” the JAMB registrar said.
