A police officer was shot and killed in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State.
Eyewitnesses claim that the tragic incident happened Friday night near the well-known Landmark hotel on Olu Obasanjo road.
When the male police inspector was escorting his principal, he was fired at, and the assailants fled in a grey 2005 Toyota Corolla automobile.
The inspector’s AK-47 rifle and beret are said to have been stolen by the attackers, in a brief statement after the Rivers State Police Command spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko confirmed the tragic event.
“Effort is ongoing to arrest the fleeing hoodlums and recover the rifle,” the statement read.
The police spokesperson said the corpse of the inspector has been deposited at the Military Hospital in Port Harcourt for autopsy.
