Students of The University of Lagos have continued to express their displeasure with the lastest increase of their tuition fee by management of the institution.
Recall that the University management on recently made a significantly increased the tuition fees of students from about N20,000 to a whopping N120,000.
Announcing the increment at a meeting held with representatives of non-teaching staff unions on Thursday, July 20, 2023, at the Senate Committee Chamber of the university, the school Vice Chancellor Professor Folasade Ogunsola explained that the proposed fees for undergraduate students will see a substantial increase from the previous amount of about N20,000 to over N100,000, depending on the course of study.
She explained that the new tuition structure, will see undergraduate students without laboratory or studio usage paying a total of N100,750, while those with lab or studio use will face a fee of N140,250.
For students pursuing courses in the College of Medicine, the tuition will be set at N190,250.
However students that are yet to recover from the hard felt impact of the removal of subsidy have continued to dread the new tuition regime.
Speaking with PoliticsNow on Friday a 400level student who identified herself as Aniekan expressed worries about how students will be able to afford the new tuition.
Despite being an outgoing student Aniekan expressed fear that the new tuition might force students to drop out for their inability to afford the outrageous fee.
” While I’m already graduating and i might not immediately feel the impact of this development i am very sure that a lot of students might not be able to afford this fee,’ she said.
She appealed to the school management to substantially reduce the fee to encourage the poor to get educated.
On his part Ayodele who is currently having his masters at the institution frowned at the government for failing to take into cognisance the plight of the masses.
According to Ayodele the government should have considered the fact that Subsidy was recently removed and just allow tye students enjoy the benefit of subsidized education.
On his part Adeola said the government was already pushing the entire populace to the wall and that the masses might revolt against the outrageous increments.
