A tense playoff semi-final in Sarajevo appeared to be going Bosnia and Herzegovina’s way until an astonishing late turnaround, saw Ukraine fight back from a goal down to win 2-1 and advance to the Euro 2024 playoff final against Iceland.
The hosts took the lead just before the hour mark through an own goal by Mykola Matviyenko. Despite mounting pressure, Ukraine struggled to find an equaliser as Bosnia defended resolutely. However, Roman Yaremchuk’s close-range finish in the 85th minute silenced the home crowd and set up a dramatic finale.
With the momentum firmly with the visitors, an incredible 88th-minute header by Artem Dovbyk from Yaremchuk’s cross completed the remarkable comeback for Ukraine. Bosnia pushed for a late leveller but could not find a way through as their playoff hoodoo struck again.
While ecstatic with the victory, Ukraine will need to improve on their poor record of losing 6 of their last 7 playoff matches.
