A State Department official confirmed Thursday that the US has chartered a plane to evacuate non-essential personnel from coup-torn Niger.
The flight, which is also open to American citizens looking to leave the West African country, is set to leave Niamey on Friday afternoon “if all goes well,” the official said on condition of anonymity.
The source disclosed that a week after President Mohamed Bazoum was overthrown by his own guard and a military junta was put in place, the consular services in Niger had started contacting “several hundred” registered US citizens to find out whether they intended to stay or leave the unstable country.
He further revealed that there were some Americans who did not wish to leave.
The same source claimed that a few Americans have already traveled on flights that France and Italy have chartered recently.
