Hoodlums have set ablaze two local government secretariats in Rivers state barely 48 hours after new chairmen were elected.
The affected local government secretariats were Ikwerre and Eleme.
In Ikwerre, the thugs set ablaze the newly built council secretariat at Isiokpo in the Ikwerre Local Government Area of the state.
The arson took place hours after the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, ordered the immediate withdrawal of police officers at the 23 local government secretariats in the state.
A video shared online showed a section of the secretariat’s administrative building on fire.
Thugs also set a section of the Eleme Local Government Area secretariat in Rivers State ablaze.
The development was confirmed by former Ambassador, Oji Ngofa, during a telephone conversation with Channels TV.
According to him, the newly elected chairman of Eleme LG, Brain Gokpa, arrived at the secretariat in the company of his councillors and supporters, only to discover that some buildings in the complex had been set ablaze.
The event has sparked apprehension, especially with the already brewing political tensions.
