Tobi Amusan, the defending champion, was defeated by Jamaica’s Danielle Williams in the women’s 100-meter hurdles final on Thursday in Budapest.
Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico, the reigning Olympic champion, finished second in 12.44 seconds, while 30-year-old Williams took first place in Beijing in 2015. American Kendra Harrison finished third in 12.46 seconds.
Amusan and 2019 winner Nia Ali were never in the hunt, finishing sixth and last respectively.
Additionally, Antonio Watson of Jamaica defeated a strong field to earn gold in the men’s 400m on Thursday at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest.
The 21-year-old Watson finished first in 44.22 seconds thanks to a superbly timed effort down the home straight.
Matthew Hudson-Smith of the United Kingdom won silver in 44.31 seconds, and Quincy Hall of the United States won bronze (44.37).
