President Bola Tinubu has stepped in to mediate in the ongoing political conflict between Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State and his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
It has been reported that the President has called for a crucial meeting in Abuja today (Friday) with key figures, including the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Olamide Oladiji, assembly members, state party chairman Ade Adetimehin, and other party leaders. National Assembly representatives from the state have also received invitations.
This development comes in the wake of the state assembly issuing an impeachment notice to the deputy governor on grounds of alleged gross misconduct. In response, the deputy governor has contested the impeachment in court. Adding to the tension is Governor Akeredolu’s prolonged absence following his return from a medical trip abroad.
Aiyedatiwa’s supporters, expressing dissatisfaction with the governor’s continued absence, had threatened to protest last week. They insisted that if the governor did not resume, Aiyedatiwa should be declared the acting governor.
Prominent figures, including the pan-Yoruba socio-political group Afenifere and traditional rulers, have appealed to President Tinubu to intervene to prevent a constitutional crisis.
Reports indicate that the state House of Assembly, comprising 26 members, is now divided, with 11 members aligning with the deputy governor and advocating for his designation as acting governor.
