President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the Senate to conduct the screening and confirmation of 11 justices recommended for appointment to the Supreme Court bench. This request was conveyed through a letter read by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, during the plenary session on Wednesday.
The National Judicial Council (NJC) had recommended the 11 nominees to Tinubu, pending Senate confirmation, to fill vacant positions at the Supreme Court resulting from the death and resignations of some justices. The NJC made the recommendation after receiving a list of 22 nominees.
The recommended justices include Haruna Tsammani (North-East), Moore Adumein (South-South), Jummai Sankey (North-Central), Chidiebere Uwa (South-East), Chioma Nwosu-Iheme (South-East), Obande Ogbuinya (South-East), Stephen Adah (North-Central), Habeeb Abiru (South-West), Jamilu Tukur (North-West), Abubakar Umar (North-West), and Mohammed Idris (North-Central).
The Senate President referred the confirmation request to the Senate Committee on Judiciary for screening and further legislative input. Currently, the Supreme Court bench has 10 justices, below the statutory requirement of 21 judges. The confirmation of these nominees would address the representation of the South-East and North-Central regions on the Supreme Court bench.
