The Federal Government has donated 20 trucks of rice to the 36 state governors and the federal capital territory for onward distribution to Nigerians.
The rice, sourced from local markets, may further exacerbate food inflation as confirmed by Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Olayemi Cardoso, who last May identified the huge purchases of food items by the government as palliatives for distribution to vulnerable citizens as a contributor to the galloping food inflation in the country.
He had said, “The huge purchases by the government for distribution as palliatives to vulnerable citizenry is adding another dimension to the food price inflation.”
Despite the warning by the CBN chief, the federal government has announced another round of fiood palliatives, this time truck-load of rice to be distributed to the 36 states of the federation and the federal capital territory.
Addressing state House Reporters after the Federal Executive Council meeting on Monday, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said the rice is for the most vulnerable Nigerians.
He also said the Tinubu administration is committed to making sure that Nigerians have food on their table.
