In their opening match of Group B at the Australia and New Zealand 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Nigeria’s Super Falcons held Canada to a scoreless draw.
With the outcome of the opening fixture, the Super Falcons are still unbeaten against Canada in women’s World Cup games after three encounters; winning one game and securing two draws.
Early in the second half, Chiamaka Nnadozie, the busier of the two goalkeepers, stopped a penalty.
Deborah Abiodun’s dismissal for a dangerous foul forced the Falcons to play the final few minutes of the game with just 10 players.
Christine Sinclair made the first effort at scoring in the ninth minute, but her curler missed the goal by a whisker.
Ifeoma Onumonu had the Super Falcons’ first opportunity in the 23rd minute, but her effort was parried away for a corner.
Tosin Demehin made a great block to stop a goal-bound attempt with five minutes remaining.
After consulting with VAR, Abiodun was given a straight red card for a nasty tackle in the 98th minute.
Super Falcons will take on host Australia next Thursday as they continue the quest to win the 2023 FIFA women’s world cup.
