Super Falcons drop to 34th in latest FIFA rankings despite continental dominance

In the most recent FIFA world rankings released on Friday, the Super Falcons have experienced a slight dip, sliding from their August 2023 position of 32nd to the 34th spot globally.

Despite this modest decline on the international stage, the nine-time African champions have managed to retain their number-one ranking on the continent. Their noteworthy performance at the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand earlier this year had propelled the team from 40th to 32nd place in the rankings.

The Falcons’ achievements were acknowledged at the 2023 CAF Awards held in Marrakech, Morocco, on Monday, where Nigeria secured the prestigious Best Women’s National Team award.

Looking ahead, the skilled Nigerian squad is gearing up for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to take place in Morocco. This upcoming tournament provides the Falcons with an opportunity to showcase their prowess closer to home.

In the latest rankings, Spain claimed the top spot for the first time following their recent World Cup victory. The US Women’s National Team now occupies the 2nd position, having been displaced from their long-held rank. Host nation Australia climbed to 11th, reflecting their impressive World Cup performance, including reaching the quarter-finals.
