Super Falcons beat Australia 3-2 in FIFA world cup taking the lead in the group B

Super Falcons beat Australia in ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup, edge closer to next round

The Super Falcons defeated Australia 3-2 in their second match of the 2017 FIFA Women’s World Cup on Thursday at Brisbane Stadium.

This is Nigeria’s first victory at the ongoing tournament and the fifth victory in the Women’s World Cup’s history.

Nigeria defeated the host nation of Australia 3-1 and ascended to the top of Group B after coming back from a goal down in the second half. Near the end of the first half, Emily van Egmond gave the hosts the lead. However, Uchenna Kanu of Nigeria quickly brought Nigeria back into the game. Due to two goals scored after the interval, the Super Falcons earned their first victory of the competition.

The Super Falcons’ chances of progressing to the round of 16 have improved following Canada’s 2-1 victory against Ireland on Wednesday.

The Falcons grabbed a valuable point in their tournament debut by demonstrating their defensive abilities, which included custodian Chiamaka Nnadozie saving a penalty.

However, the Nigerian ladies will have to take on the Republic of Ireland in the last group fixtures of the 2023 FIFA World Cup tournament. A victory against the Republic of Ireland will send the Super Falcons to the next round of the tournament.
