Veteran Uruguayan striker, Luis Suarez, has confirmed that the 2024 Major League Soccer season with Inter Miami will be the final chapter of his illustrious playing career.
Now aged 37, Suarez moved to the Florida-based club in 2023 after a season back in South America with Brazilian side Gremio.
The news comes just days before Inter Miami kick off their MLS campaign on February 21 at home against Real Salt Lake. Suarez told Uruguayan radio station Del Sol: “Inter Miami will be my last club, my family already knows that.” Though he did not specify an exact retirement date, he added: “I don’t have a date yet, but it’s the last step.”
In joining the 2020 MLS expansion franchise, Suarez was reunited with several former Barcelona teammates with whom he enjoyed remarkable success between 2014 and 2019. Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba were all part of the squad that won four La Liga titles in five seasons playing alongside Suarez at the Nou Camp.
As well as reaching iconic status in Spain with Barcelona, Suarez also spent productive spells at Ajax, Liverpool and Atletico Madrid. Since making his international debut in 2007 at the age of 20, the striker has earned 138 senior caps for Uruguay, making him one of La Celeste’s greatest-ever players.
Suarez cited spending more time with family as he approaches the end of his career, saying: “I’m ready for this last challenge, but there is an inevitable fatigue and, in the end, I want to have quality of life in the future.”
