The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has reacted to a recent report of the proposed plan by President Bola Tinubu to increase the country’s minimum wage to N200,000.
On Monday, local media platforms reported that there are indications that President Tinubu is planning to increase the country’s minimum wage to N200,000 in the wake of the recent removal of fuel subsidy that have continued to make life difficult for Nigerians.
Mr Sowore had during his campaign in the buildup to the 2023 presidential election, promised to increase the country’s minimum wage to N250,000; a move that many Nigerians termed impossible based on the current economic situation of Nigeria.
However, on Monday, media reports detailed that President Tinubu was planning to increase the country’s minimum wage to N200,000.
Reacting to the development in a tweet, Sowore shared images showing a report in which he promised to increase the country’s minimum wage to N250,000 to reflect the reality of the country’s current economic situation with the caption “All truth passes through three stages: First, it is ridiculed; second, it is violently opposed; and third, it is accepted as self-evident.” – Arthur Schopenhauer “A leadership with vision, mission and that which is clairvoyant and futuristic in its dealing can’t be found amongst mediocre people.”
The proposal is made at a time when the nation’s minimum wage is N30,000.
Recall that the minimum wage was raised by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 from N18,000 to N30,000. The most recent proposal, if implemented, would increase the nation’s minimum wage by about 600%.
