Activist and politician, Omoyele Sowore, has faulted the action of a magistrate who punished a man with 15 strokes of the cane for fighting with a prostitute.
Sowore shared a video of the convict being whipped by a court official.
According to the activist, the caning was ordered by Magistrate Farida Ibrahim on the strength that the defendant confessed to the police of fighting the prostitute.
Sowore also claimed that the defendant had no lawyer to defend him during the sentencing, wondering why the Chief Magistrate relied solely on the testimony of the police to make the decision.
Sowore disclosed this via his X handle with the video of the caning: “I just witnessed a bizarre sentence at the Chief Magistrate Court in Wuse 6, Abuja. Magistrate Farida Ibrahim sentenced this youngster to 15 strokes of public caning, the sentence against him without a lawyer, based on police evidence that he confessed to fighting a prostitute.”
