Acclaimed South Korean actor Lee Sun-kyun, celebrated for his versatile roles in film and television, was tragically discovered dead inside a vehicle parked in Seoul’s mid-northern Seongbuk district. A Seongbuk police station official confirmed the incident, revealing that Lee’s body had been transferred to Seoul National University Hospital.
The actor, a graduate of South Korea’s prestigious Korea National University of Arts, gained widespread recognition for his performances in various roles, including a charismatic chef and a genius neuroscientist. Lee reached international acclaim for his portrayal of the wealthy patriarch in director Bong Joon-ho’s Oscar-winning film “Parasite.”
Lee’s career took a downturn when he became the subject of a police investigation into his alleged use of marijuana and other drugs. The actor, once celebrated for his wholesome image, was reportedly dropped from television and commercial projects following the scandal.
Local news outlets indicated that Lee left behind a note resembling a will, adding a layer of tragedy to the circumstances. Fans took to social media to express their grief and share memories of Lee’s impactful performances that left a lasting impression.
Renowned Korean-American writer Min Jin Lee joined others in extending condolences, acknowledging Lee’s praiseworthy work in “Parasite” and his exceptional performance in “My Mister.”
Lee’s reputation suffered a significant blow as South Korean authorities probed into his alleged drug use, which he claimed occurred at the residence of a hostess employed at a high-end bar in Seoul’s Gangnam district. The actor asserted that he was unaware of the illegal nature of the drugs and felt remorse for the disappointment he caused.
South Korea has stringent laws regarding illegal drugs, and citizens who use such substances abroad may face legal consequences upon returning to the country. Lee Sun-kyun is survived by his wife, actress Jeon Hye-jin, and two sons.
