In the opening match of their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, South Africa secured a 2-1 victory over Benin at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday. Goals from Percy Tau and Khuliso Mudau propelled Hugo Broos’ side to claim an essential three points in Group C.
Tau initiated the scoring for Bafana Bafana within the first two minutes, slotting in a goal after a well-orchestrated buildup by Aubrey Modiba and Sphephelo Sithole. Although the hosts dominated the game, they had to wait until the first-half stoppage time to double their advantage. Mudau volleyed home after Tau and Themba Zwane collaborated to expose the Benin defense.
The Cheetahs pulled a goal back through Steve Mounie in the 70th minute, creating a tense finale. Nevertheless, South Africa managed to hold on, securing a winning start on their journey to the 2026 finals in North America. This triumph positions Bafana Bafana at the top of Group C following the initial round of matches.
While Broos expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance, he acknowledges there is still significant work ahead in the qualifying campaign. It remains prudent not to get carried away after just one game, as Bafana Bafana showcased impressive football with room for improvement, particularly when they appeared vulnerable late in the match.
Both South Africa and Benin will resume World Cup qualifying action on Tuesday, with Bafana Bafana traveling to Rwanda and the Cheetahs hosting Lesotho. Broos aims to secure another three points to establish early momentum in the race for the World Cup.
