The Anambra State government has launched an investigation into the tragic stampede in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area, where several people lost their lives during the Obijackson Foundation’s Christmas rice distribution.
The government in a statement on Sunday, pledged to identify lapses and address safety concerns.
It called on charities to adopt structured, decentralized distribution methods and prioritize vulnerable groups.
Key recommendations from the government include establishing multiple distribution points to reduce overcrowding and implementing crowd control measures with trained personnel.
However, Governor Chukwuma Soludo has extended condolences, expressing grief for the loss of lives, particularly among women, children, the elderly, and pregnant or nursing mothers.
In a statement by his press secretary, Mr. Christian Aburime, the governor acknowledged the Foundation’s noble intentions but emphasized the need for safer distribution practices.
