In a thrilling turn of events on Sunday, Serbia secured their place in the upcoming European Championships by staging a dramatic comeback to secure a 2-2 draw against Bulgaria at the Dubocica Stadium in Leskovac. This hard-fought point propelled Serbia to finish second in Group G, with Hungary having secured qualification the previous month.
Serbia initially took the lead in the 17th minute with a goal from centre-back Milos Veljkovic. However, Bulgaria responded, leveling the score at 1-1 with a goal from substitute Georgi Rusev in the 59th minute. The visitors then took the lead in the 69th minute through Kiril Despodov. Undeterred, Serbia rallied and managed to equalize in the 82nd minute, with Srdjan Babic securing the crucial goal to salvage the draw they needed.
With this comeback draw, Serbia solidified their qualification for Euro 2024, set to take place in Germany next summer. They will join 16 other nations at the tournament, with the draw scheduled for December.
Despite Montenegro’s 3-1 victory over Hungary in Budapest, they fell short of qualification as they needed Serbia to lose for any chance of progressing. However, Hungary had already secured the top spot in Group G.
The conclusion of the qualification campaign marks an eventful year for Serbia, and they now look forward to the Euros with renewed optimism under the guidance of manager Dragan Stojkovic.
