In the inaugural match of the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, the Senegalese national team, fondly known as the Teranga Lions, showcased their prowess by effortlessly defeating South Sudan 4-0 at the Olympic Stadium in Diamniadio on Saturday.
Senegal took control right from the outset, breaking the deadlock just a minute into the game with a goal from Pape Sarr. Star forward Sadio Mane extended the lead in the 6th minute after a clever assist from Habib Diallo. The relentless pressure from Senegal continued, leading to a 3-0 advantage just before half-time, courtesy of Lamine Camara, who capitalized on a set-up from Idrissa Gueye.
Early in the second half, Mane sealed the comprehensive victory by converting a penalty kick, making it 4-0. Despite additional opportunities, stellar goalkeeping from South Sudan’s Majak Mawith and some missed chances prevented Senegal from further widening the scoreline.
Senegal’s coach, Aliou Cisse, wisely substituted Mane and other key players later in the match to preserve their energy for the upcoming qualifiers. The Teranga Lions dominated possession and significantly outshot their opponents, securing a comfortable victory.
Both teams are set to return to World Cup qualifying action on Tuesday, November 21. South Sudan will host Mauritania, while Senegal will travel to face Togo. Following the impressive opening match, Senegal currently leads Group B in the African qualifying campaign for the 2026 World Cup.
