Oby Ezekwesili, former Education Minister, has voiced reservations about Godswill Akpabio’s eligibility for the role of President of the Nigerian Senate, suggesting that his potential leadership could pose a threat to the stability of the country’s democracy. In a tweet shared on Wednesday, Ezekwesili expressed concern about the state of Nigerian democracy, emphasizing the imperative for opposition lawmakers to actively address issues affecting the citizens who entrusted them with their votes.
Ezekwesili stated, “The precarious state of our Nigerian Democracy seems to be further endangered by @Senator_Akpabio, who, if not for the compromised nature of the country’s Judiciary @NGCourtofAppeal, should not bear the title of Senator, let alone aspire to the position of Senate President. The judiciary appears to have forsaken its role and yielded to the influence of corrupt politicians.”
In recognizing opposition party members taking a stand, she commended Senator Tony Nwoye, Ireti King-ibe, and other Labor Party Senators for fulfilling their democratic duty. Ezekwesili urged them to collectively address issues impacting the citizens who elected them, reminding them of expectations regarding the use of luxury SUVs and encouraging them to prioritize the interests of the electorate.
Ezekwesili’s concerns come in the wake of a recent incident where a Labour Party Senator protested against Akpabio’s alleged interference in the Senate minority leaders’ selection process.
