A Chief Magistrate Court in Port-Hacourt, Rivers State will on September 25, 2023 deliver judgement on the rape and assault case of a 20 years-old female student of the Rivers State University by a suspended lecturer of the same University, Professor David Ogbonna.
Professor Ogbonna was first arraigned by the Rivers State Police Command on charges of rape and sexual assault of a female student in the Department of Micro-Biology in Rivers State University.
The Rivers State government later indicated interest to take over the prosecution of the matter.
On arraignment, the accused Professor pleaded not guilty to the offense which is said to be punishable under Section 360 of the criminal code, CAP 37 of laws of Rivers State, Nigeria 1999.
Professor Ogbonna was, however, granted bail and trial commenced.
When the matter was called up for judgment on Thursday, parties were informed of the absence of the presiding Chief Magistrate, Poromon Menenen, who directed that the parties should choose a new date for the delivering of the judgment.
Consequently, the parties agreed to return on 25th of September, for the judgment.
