Manchester United have completed the £71 million signing of Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford, with the Cameroon international putting pen to paper on a five-year contract running until June 2030. The 25-year-old forward becomes United’s most expensive acquisition of the transfer window, surpassing the £62.5 million paid for Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier this summer. Brentford rejected two previous offers from the Old Trafford club before accepting the final package, which includes an initial £65 million paid in four instalments plus performance-related bonuses worth up to £6 million.
The winger had attracted interest from several English Premier League rivals, including Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Newcastle United, but remained determined to join United after supporting the club during his childhood. “The team whose shirt I wore growing up,” Mbeumo explained when announcing his move. His commitment to the United project proved decisive in negotiations, with the player actively pushing for the transfer despite competing offers from other top-flight clubs. The deal represents Brentford’s record sale, doubling their previous highest fee of £33.6 million received for Ivan Toney’s departure to Saudi Arabia last year.
Mbeumo arrives at Old Trafford with an impressive EPL record, having scored 31 goals and provided 21 assists across his final two seasons with Brentford. The versatile attacker missed significant time during the 2023/2024 campaign due to ankle surgery but returned to form last season with 20 league goals. His consistency and availability have been key factors in United’s pursuit, with the forward missing just 16 matches across four top-flight seasons. Head coach Ruben Amorim will likely deploy Mbeumo on the right wing, where he has excelled at cutting inside onto his preferred left foot.
United’s summer recruitment strategy continues to focus on attacking reinforcements, with Mbeumo joining Cunha and promising teenager Enzo Kana-Biyik in moving to the club. The 18-year-old Kana-Biyik will spend the upcoming season on loan at Swiss side Lausanne-Sport to gain experience. Director of football Jason Wilcox praised Mbeumo’s “exceptional” goal and assist record, describing him as “amongst the most productive players in England for the last three seasons.” The signing addresses United’s need for consistent goal threats from wide positions.
The transfer comes as Marcus Rashford prepares for a season-long loan move to Barcelona, creating space in United’s attacking ranks for new arrivals. Mbeumo’s penalty-taking ability adds another dimension to his game, having converted 11 of his 12 spot-kicks for Brentford throughout his career. His development from an inconsistent winger into a reliable goal scorer reflects the improvement United hope he can continue under Amorim’s guidance.
