In a solemn ceremony held at the National Arcade, Eagle Square, Abuja, President Bola Tinubu led the nation in commemorating the 2024 Armed Forces Remembrance Day (AFRD). This annual event, organized by the Ministry of Defence, is a poignant tribute to Nigeria’s fallen heroes, honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice during the First and Second World Wars, the Nigerian Civil War, Peace Support Operations across the globe, and various Internal Security Operations.
The ceremony witnessed the participation of all service chiefs, headed by Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Christopher Musa, alongside leaders of other security agencies. Distinguished figures present included the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Tajudeen Abbas, Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Kayode Ariwoola, Minister of Defence, Minister of FCT, Nyeson Wike, among others.
President Tinubu took the lead in laying the first wreath in honor of the fallen heroes. Following suit, the Service Chiefs, Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chief Justice of the Federation, and other dignitaries paid their respects. The ceremony encompassed prayers, gun salutes, and the symbolic release of white pigeons, symbolizing peace, tranquility, and national unity.
After the wreath-laying, President Tinubu signed the 2024 Armed Forces Remembrance Anniversary register. Subsequently, he released the white pigeons, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to peace, harmony, and coexistence.
The event drew attendance from members of the Federal Executive Council, the diplomatic corps, and various other dignitaries. The Armed Forces Remembrance Day serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by Nigeria’s servicemen and women throughout history, emphasizing the importance of honoring their memory and contributions to national security and global peacekeeping efforts.
