The comment by Power Minister, Adebayo Adelabu that Nigerians waste electricity because it’s cheap, has received strong condemnations from citizens.
Adelabu during a press conference on Friday to justify the over 300 percent increment of electricity, said Nigerians have a consumption management problem.
Hear him: “A lot of people will come back from work, they want to have dinner, or they want to see their colleagues down the road, they switch on the AC for the room to be cooling before they come back. Some people will be going to work in the morning, a freezer that you left on for days, they will still leave it on when all the items in the freezer are frozen and 5, 6, 8 hours of their absence will not make it to defreeze, they will still leave it to be consuming power just because we are not paying enough.”
The comment by Adelabu has been greeted with outrage on social media.
On X, Nigerians have been descending on the power minister.
Comrade Shehu Sani, a former senator who represented Kaduna Central, said via his handle @ShehuSani: “Telling Nigerians to switch off their refrigerators is simply telling them not to have refrigerators in their homes. Anyway,we once had an Agric minister who said N30 is enough for a meal.”
Dagreatdey4you said: “Even with erratic power supply, expecting Nigerians to turn off their freezers while loaded with food is unrealistic. Minister of Power, Mr. Bayo Adelabu, fix the electricity issue instead of making excuses.”
@taadelodun said: “Fuel is cheap in Nigeria. Education is cheap in Nigeria. Internet is cheap in Nigeria. Now Electricity is cheap in Nigeria. How much is our minimum wage? India has a capacity of over 400,000 MW. Pakistan has a capacity of 40,000 MW. Our leaders should be begging us not gaslighting. You are pushing Nigerians to the wall.”
@skyedron said: “The man said he sees people who leave their air conditioners on for days. My question is, where did this man grow up to see electricity that people can leave on for days. I thought they said that Tinubu has an eye for talent, I hope this is not one of them.”
@laraGold143 said: “Politics in Nigeria has to be the only job where inexperience is considered a virtue.”
