A High Court sitting in Asaba, Delta State has sentenced a police Inspector, Ubi Ebri to death for the murder of Onyeka Ibeh, a businessman who lost his life because he refused to part with N100 bribe.
The police inspector was accused of killing Onyeka at a checkpoint in Asaba, on April 5, 2023 after a bribe demand which Onyeka refused to pay.
The Prosecution led by E.H Edema, a Director in the Ministry of Justice, alleged that the defendant, was part of the Police Patrol team that mounted the stop and search exercise.
The deceased and his wife were said to be driving from Ugbolu to Asaba when they were flagged down by the police team for search.
The defendant was said to have opened fire on the vehicle leaving the deceased dead after he was hit on the head by bullet.
The wife of the deceased who sat in the front seat with him was however, unhurt.
The Court, presided over by Justice C. D Diai convicted and sentenced the defendant to death on Thursday, June 13, 2024.
