Spokesperson of the Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin has explained why the force dispersed crowd at the candle light procession held in honour of deceased singer Mohbad who died last week.
Giving it’s explanation in a statement made available on his official Twitter handle, Mr Hundeyin detailed that the organisers of the candlelight procession had agreed to end the event at 8:00 p.m.
According to Mr Hundeyin, mischief makers attempted to take advantage of the event to gather at the tollgate for events that were not related to the candlelight procession.
“It is instructive to note that the Lagos State Police Command had an agreement with the organizers of the candlelight procession that the procession was to end at 8pm latest and should terminate at Muri Okunola, Victoria Island. It was clearly stated for avoidance of doubt that in the interest of all Lagosians and considering the heavy use of the Lekki-Epe Expressway, the Lekki Toll Gate would be a no-go area,” the statement read.
“It, however, became disconcerting that after the procession duly ended at Muri Okunola park as agreed, with the police providing optimal security all through, some persons started gathering at the Lekki Toll Gate with intent to manifest objectives extraneous to the #justiceforMohbad initiative. Being a clear violation of the laid down agreement, the Lagos State Police Command invited the procession organizers who came back and joined the officers on ground in persuading the people at the toll gate to disperse peacefully,” the statement added.
PoliticsNow had earlier reported that celebrities including Davido, Zlatan and Falz attended the candle light procession held in honor of the deceased singer.
Already popular Nigerian Disc Jockey, DJ switch had faulted the conduct of the police during the candlelight procession. According to her the actions of police officers brought back memories from the Lekki massacre.
Recall that the death of Mohbad had sparked outrage among Nigerians with many seeking justice for the deceased singer who is believed to have been killed.
However, accusing fingers have been pointed at his former lable boss Naira Marley and his associate Sam Larry who allegedly maltreated and intimidated him continually before he died.
The Police however warned mischief makers that any person or group of persons found disturbing the peace of the state, under whatever guise, would be promptly arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
