The police in Lagos have arrested over a dozen of peaceful protesters, including Comrade Hassan Taiwo Soweto at the Lekki Tollgate during the fourth memorial of the #EndSARS massacre.
Soweto who is one of the organising committee members of the #EndBadGovernance Movement in Lagos had on Friday said they would be joining other groups to mark the fourth memorial of #EndSARS massacre.
Recall that on October 20, 2020, scores of protesters were killed at Lekki Tollgate by soldiers. Their offense – demanding the end to police brutality and the scrapping of the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS), the police unit notorious for extrajudicial killings.
The government at the time deployed soldiers to the Lekki Tollgate who violently crushed the protest by shooting directly at protesters, even when they were peaceful and waving the Nigerian flag.
In commemoration of the gruesome killing of over a dozen protesters at Lekki, Nigerians on Sunday converged at the Lekki Tollgate to lay a wreath and held a procession in memory of the deceased. It was at the event that Comrade Hassan Taiwo Soweto and 17 other activists were arrested at the Lekki Tollgate.
A post by activist lawyer, Inibehe Effiong said those arrested were brutalized and are currently being detained at the State CID Panti.
Effiong added: “They were entirely peaceful and did not disrupt public peace in any way.
“We will do everything under the law to secure their release. This is unconstitutional and unacceptable.”
