Peter Obi condemns brutal treatment of NLC President Joe Ajaero in Imo
Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 presidential election, has strongly denounced the ill-treatment suffered by Joe Ajaero during the recent Nigerian Labour Congress protest held in Owerri, the capital of Imo State.
PoliticsNow had earlier reported that Mr. Ajaero had journeyed to Owerri to lead a worker’s protest aimed at expressing their grievances towards the leadership of Imo State, led by Governor Hope Uzodinma. However, he was arrested and whisked away by officers from the Imo State Police Command.
The labor union contended that Mr. Ajaero was subjected to brutal treatment by the Imo State Police Command. In contrast, the Imo Command refuted these claims, asserting that they had merely taken Mr. Ajaero into custody as a preventive measure due to reports of a planned attack against the union leader.
In response to this incident, Peter Obi expressed his dismay, saying that the assault on the NLC president underscores the prevailing lawlessness within the country.
Mr. Obi’s statement read, “The events that transpired with President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Joe Ajaero, in Imo State, yesterday, have profoundly shocked most Nigerians. It serves as a stark reflection of the current state of affairs in our nation.”
“It is a distressing manifestation of the extent of lawlessness, impunity, criminality, and unruly behavior that have engulfed our beloved country. Incidents like this should be a cause for concern for anyone who values the kind of nation we collectively desire and merit,” he added.
