According to PUNCH Sports Extra, Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro has reportedly urged the Nigeria Football Federation Technical Committee not to instruct him on his coaching responsibilities but rather focus on settling the outstanding allowances for him and his team.
This response allegedly came after NFF Technical Committee Chairman, Shariff Ahlan, suggested in a meeting in Lisbon, Portugal, in October that Peseiro’s poor technical abilities were contributing to the Eagles’ struggles.
In defense, Peseiro pointed out the delay in receiving his allowances, stating, “You’re busy to pay me my allowances but not busy to tell me what I will do.” He made it clear that if he remained in the technical committee, any submitted squad list would need justification based on players’ statistics and club performance.
Despite leading Nigeria to qualification for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, Peseiro’s team faces challenges in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, having drawn against Lesotho and Zimbabwe. In 15 games, Peseiro has won six, lost six, with the team scoring 31 goals and conceding 21.
Sports Minister John Enoh has summoned Peseiro over the Eagles’ poor performance in the World Cup qualifying campaign. Enoh emphasized the need for careful decision-making, considering the proximity of AFCON and the upcoming World Cup qualification rounds in June. While acknowledging the emotional reactions from football stakeholders, Enoh stressed that decisions regarding the coach should not be solely driven by emotions and passions.
