The 20th of August of each year will be observed as “Isese Day” in Oyo state, according to the announcement made by the governor on Friday in Ibadan.
According to a statement from Prof. Olanike Adeyemo, the Secretary to the Oyo State Government (SSG), Makinde also announced this Monday as the first public holiday to honour the day.
The term “Isese” is used to refer to several celebrations celebrated by followers of the Yoruba traditional religion or culture, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
“The approval is an indication that Gov. Makinde is committed to inclusivity and respect for all religious practices in the state,” the SSG said.
According to him, the governor advised the state’s adherents of traditional religion to use the occasion to pray for the harmony, peace, and stability of the state and of Nigeria as a whole.
Recall that Ogun State governor Dapo Abiodun in March declared Aug. 20 of every year as ‘Isese Day’, in the state.
In July, the Ogun House of Assembly passed a resolution for the state to observe the Isese Cultural Day every August 20.
