After creating a genre which he describes as Afro-fusion, a blend of R&B, hip hop, dancehall, and reggae, Grammy award-winning artiste, Burna Boy, has trashed Afrobeats, describing it as ‘nothing.’
In an interview on Apple Music, Burna Boy said 90 percent of Afrobeats songs are devoid of real-life experiences and only portray an amazing time which life isn’t all about.
“Not even experience, because half of them, like 90% of them, have no real-life experience that they can understand.
“That’s why you hear most Nigerian music, African Music, or Afrobeats, as you people call it, is mostly about nothing, absolutely nothing. There is no substance to it, like nobody is talking about anything, it’s just a great time. But at the end of the day, life isn’t an amazing time.”
His statement has sparked outrage on social media.
@itsSh0la said: “Burna Boy is like a lot of men these days, you talk down on your brothers and other men just to look outstanding, you discredit other men just to look like you’re better than them or you’re the only shitt. Gutter behavior!!!”
@A__yabo said: “Davido and Wizkid are the Ronaldo and Messi of Afrobeats, any other artist is levels below them. Burna boy is the neymar of Afrobeats, he’s good but he isn’t on the GOATS level yet. He should make peace with this and stop trying to act like there is competition btwn them to begin with.”
@Jamostilldey said: “Burna Boy can chase all the CLOUT in this world just to seek attention for his upcoming album, but make him pray make that Album no tank cause I go press that Weyrey Balls.”
@_AsiwajuLerry said: “Dear Burna boy, you don’t need to downplay other people’s crafts just because you sampled your way to the top.”
@_ElectricVibex said: “Burna boy is just a disgrace to Afrobeats, this is someone that left afrobeats to do reggae. ran back to empty Fela’s catalogue when he realized the genre has became big and recognized globally. He’s constantly benefiting from other people’s hard work but saying the most shittt.”
