Victor Osimhen played a pivotal role in Napoli’s Serie A resurgence on Saturday night, contributing a goal and an assist in their 2-1 triumph over struggling Cagliari. The Nigerian striker broke the deadlock in the 69th minute with a well-placed header, and later showcased his skill by setting up Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who secured the match-winner at the back post.
The first half at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium saw I Partenopei squander several opportunities, with defender Amir Rrahmani coming closest as his powerful header struck the upright. Cagliari had fleeting threats through Tommaso Augello and Adam Obert but failed to truly test goalkeeper Alex Meret.
A whirlwind six-minute period after the break saw three goals shared between the teams. The Rossoblu quickly equalized three minutes after Osimhen’s opener, courtesy of Leonardo Pavoletti, who rifled home from close range.
However, Kvaratskhelia had the last word in the 75th minute, converting an assist from Osimhen. Despite a late chance for Cagliari, Napoli held on to secure three crucial points.
This victory temporarily propels Napoli to 4th position in Serie A, marking a rebound from consecutive domestic losses. On the other hand, Cagliari remains precariously perched just one point above the relegation zone in 16th place.
