Supporters of the Labour Party Presidential candidate have challenged renowned Nigerian professor and Nobel Laureate winner, Wole Soyinka, to speak up against alleged threat made by President Bola Tinubu regarding the annulment of the 2023 presidential election.
PoliticsNow had on Sunday reported that Mr Tinubu threatened that nullifying the February 25 election that produced him as president, on account of the fact that he did not score 25% of the lawful votes cast during the election in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) could “lead to absurdity, chaos, anarchy and alteration of the very intention of the legislation
.
Tinubu told the Presidential Election Petition Court (PREPEC) that the two petitions filed by candidates of the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obi and his counterpart of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, seeking the nullification of his victory at the February 25, presidential election are not only novel but not familiar with the country’s electoral laws.
However, responding to Tinubu’s comment, supporters of Peter Obi the presidential candidate of the Labour Party have called on Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka to speak up against the treasonable comments made by the president.
Wole Soyinka had in April this year said the refusal of the Labour Party’s Peter Obi supporters to consider constructive criticism was their “badge of honour” and “certificate of commitment.”
Mr. Obi’s supporters, known as “Obidients,” have been at odds with Mr. Soyinka over those comments.
In an interview with Channels Television, Mr. Soyinka claimed that he had warned the party’s presidential candidate before the election that if he lost, it would be his supporters who did so on his behalf.
However, challenging the poet to speak against the anarchy threat credited to the president, Mr Obi’s supporters faulted Wole Soyinka for failing to comment on the development.
One of the leaders of Peter Obi support base asked about the whereabout of Wole Soyinka.
“Where is Wole Soyinka? Threatening Nigerians with chaos & anarchy is same as Buhari’s blood of baboons. I hope the sage will find his long-lost voice, & condemn BAT as well? Unless he has taken a Regional Position? It is time for well-meaning Nigerians to condemn Absolute Fascism,” she wrote.
Bethel Anunihu said Mr Soyinka will be nowhere near social media in times like this. “In times like this Uncle Wole would consciously be nowhere near social media or Nigeria, only when he hears Obidients then he will become active to know what Obidients said on social media,” he wrote.
On his part, @carlikwo suggested that the poet’s comment was no longer needed “Wole Soyinka’s voice is not needed anymore. Times have changed and also exposed those who have hidden under a pseudo integrity to partake in the criminality unleashed on the people. The people have found their voice and that is all that matters now,” he wrote.
