Fresh off clinching the CAF Best Goalkeeper award, Nigerian goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie played a pivotal role by making a crucial penalty save against Real Madrid’s Olga Carmon. This decisive stop contributed to Paris FC’s historic 2-1 triumph over the Spanish side on Thursday night.
Paris FC swiftly gained control with goals from Julie Dufour and captain Gaëtane Thiney, securing a comfortable lead within the first six minutes. Nnadozie showcased her goalkeeping prowess, making a key save from Athenea Del Castillo’s earlier attempt and then denying her fifth penalty since July in the 28th minute.
Despite enjoying the majority of possession, Real Madrid struggled to generate clear chances in the first half. Although the visitors managed to pull one back after the break with a goal from Caroline Møller Hansen, courtesy of a Hayley Raso cross, Paris FC remained resolute in the face of late attacks. Real Madrid’s Zornoza came closest to an equalizer, striking the bar with her late effort.
While not part of the club’s free tickets scheme, a remarkable crowd of over 10,000 fans filled the stadium to witness Paris FC secure points against their esteemed Spanish opponents, marking a historic record attendance. After the final whistle, Captain Thiney rallied support for the club’s next clash on Sunday – the Derby de la Capitale against local rivals Paris Saint-Germain.
This upset victory marked Paris FC’s first points in the 2023/2024 UEFA Champions League group stages, while for Real Madrid, it was a forgettable night. However, Paris FC supporters will cherish this historic result for years to come.
