Organized labor has opted to shift its previously announced nationwide indefinite strike for next month.
This resolution was formalized in a memorandum of understanding inked on Monday, jointly signed by prominent figures such as NLC President Joe Ajaero and General Secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja, as well as TUC President Festus Osifo and Secretary-General Nuhu Toro.
The comprehensive three-page document also bears the signatures of Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong; Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Dr. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha; and Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris.
Within the MoU, it states, “The NLC and TUC have mutually agreed to postpone the scheduled Indefinite Nationwide strike, originally set to commence on Tuesday, the 3rd of October, 2023, for a duration of 30 days.”
Furthermore, the MoU specifies, “The Federal Government has committed to providing a wage increment of N35,000 (thirty-five thousand Naira) to all Federal Government workers, effective from the month of September, pending the formalization of a new national minimum wage.” These pivotal decisions were the culmination of an extensive meeting held on Monday, which brought together representatives from the Federal Government, NLC, and TUC.
