President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has dismissed claims that the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, is genuinely advocating for the rights of workers in Imo state. Onanuga suggests that Ajaero is engaging in partisan politics by aligning himself with the Labour party’s governorship candidate ahead of the upcoming state governorship election.
In response to the labor union’s plans to stage a nationwide shutdown starting from Tuesday, November 14, Onanuga questioned how Ajaero managed to convince the Trade Union Congress (TUC) that he is championing the rights of Imo workers.
“Joe Ajaero, in collaboration with the Labour governorship candidate, is involved in partisan politics in Imo. He claims to be fighting for all workers in the state, and surprisingly, the TUC bought into this falsehood,” expressed Onanuga in a tweet.
Onanuga’s remarks are set against the backdrop of the impending nationwide shutdown by the Nigeria Labour Congress, triggered by the treatment of the union’s president during a protest in Imo state last week.
Ajaero had visited Imo last Wednesday to amplify the demands of the state’s chapter of the union. Allegations against Governor Hope Uzodinma included accusations of attempting to impose his favored candidate to lead the union and withholding workers’ salaries for several months.
In response to these allegations, Uzodinma refuted the claims, attributing them to a ploy aimed at tarnishing his chances of winning the upcoming governorship election.
